11.4　英国中型通用词典的特征

与美国同类词典相比，英国中型通用英语词典具有以下特征:

1)对英式英语的形式、发音、意义及用法给予优先描述;同时，将美式英语标为另外一种标准变体形式。例如，在《牛津简明英语词典》(第7版)中，public school被定义为:

endowed grammar(usu.boarding) school，preparing pupils esp.for universities or public services，(Sc.，US.，etc.) school managed by public authorities.

这里，英式英语意义在前，美式英语意义在后。但在《韦氏新世界词典》(第3版)中，意义顺序正好相反:

☆1 in the U.S.，an elementary or secondary school that is part of a system of free schools maintained by public taxes and supervised by local authorities; 2 in England a) orig.，any nonprofit grammar school endowed for the general use of the public b) now，any of a number of endowed，private boarding schools，generally not coeducational，which prepare students for the universities.

2)多数中型词典只提供语言信息，不提供百科信息——这是英国词典编纂的一个传统做法;

3)为了有效利用空间、内容编排紧凑、装填紧密，它们通常都没有插图。此外，在《钱伯斯20世纪词典》中，一个词的各种形式都被放在一个词目下，“textile”一词就被放在“text”下的微观结构中;

4)都包含丰富的习语、短语和固定搭配。而美国中型英语词典通常只包括习语，且数量也少得多。例如，在《牛津简明英语词典》(第7版)中，在big条目中收录了in a～way，too～for one's boots，a～man，～money，the Big Three，Big Ben，Big Board，～business，～-head，～name，～-wig，think～等30多个短语，而在《韦氏新世界词典》(大学第2版)中，仅有作为例证收录的big talk，big-headed等不到10个;

5)它们通常不含有同义词条目，但《朗文英语词典》(1984)(Longman Dictionary of the English Language，简称为LDEL)则是个例外。
