本课程是西方建筑史研究生教学的一部分。主要涉及当代西方建筑界具有代表性的思想和理论，其主题包括历史主义、先锋建筑、批判理论、建构文化以及对当代城市的解读等。本课程大量运用图片资料，广泛涉及哲学、历史、艺术等领域，力求在西方文化发展的背景中呈现建筑思想和理论的相对独立性及关联性，理解建筑作为一种人类活动所具有的社会和文化意义，启发学生的理论思维和批判精神。

Course Description

This course is a part of teaching Western architectural history for graduate students. It mainly deals with the representative thoughts and theories in Western architectural circles,including historicism,vanguard building,critical theory,construction culture and interpretation of contemporary cities and more. Using a lot of pictures involving extensive fields including philosophy,history,art,etc.,this course attempts to show the relative independence and relevance of architectural thoughts and theories under the development background of Western culture,understand the social and cultural significance owned by architectures as human activities,and inspire students’ theoretical thinking and critical spirit.

当代城市是否到处都一样？是否可能对这种趋同的城市进行理论上的反思？如果是这样的话，这在多大程度上可以激起我们的热情？趋同只是在抹煞特征性时才有可能。通常这被视为是一种损失，但是趋同正在如此巨大的规模上发生，它一定有某种意义。如果我们将这一似乎偶然的同一化现象视为一种有意的过程，一种自觉的从差异向同一发展的运动，如果我们正在目睹的是一场全球化的“打倒特征”的解放运动，那么我们能够得出怎样的结论？个性消失之后还有什么？

在当代世界建筑师之中，或者更准确地说是在当代对于建筑和城市的思想者之中，荷兰建筑师伦姆•库哈斯当属最具挑战性而又最发人深省者之列。具有挑战性的是他对建筑思想界“正统”思想方式的质疑，无论这些思维是以“历史价值”或“文脉主义”的常用语言，还是以海德格尔哲学的面貌出现，在人们以一种怀旧的心态大谈场所和识别性之失落的时候，他毫不回避的面对那些形成二十世纪都市文明的众多力量，然而发人深省的是他在接受二十世纪城市发展之现实的同时，努力探究和挖掘事物新维度的策略。

当超过一定尺度之后，建筑就不得不放弃其所谓的艺术和道德准则。它改变建筑的组织、结构和内外关系，使传统上由建筑师和规划师控制的内容成为不可能。大与尺度、建筑构图、传统、伦理决裂。“大”不接受城市肌理和文脉。

Assignment

Are contemporary cities the same everywhere? Is it possible to carry out theoretical rethinking on such convergent cities? If this is the case,to what extent can it inspire our passion? Convergence is possible only when ignoring the characteristics of the times. It is usually deemed as a loss. However,convergence is occurring on such a huge scale,so it must have a certain significance. If we consider this identity phenomenon that seems accidental as a deliberate process and a conscious movement from difference to identity,and if what we are witnessing is a globalized liberation movement of “down with the characteristics”,what conclusions can we draw? What else are there after personality disappears?

Among architects in the contemporary world,or more accurately,among contemporary architecture and urban thinkers,the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas is undoubtedly one of the most challenging and most thoughtprovoking ones. What is challenging is his questioning to the "orthodox" way of thinking in the architectural thinking world; whether the thinking appears in the common language of "historical value" or "contextualism",or in Heidegger's philosophy,when people talk about the loss of site and ability to identify in a nostalgic mindset,he bravely faces those extensive forces that form the urban civilization of the twentieth century. However,what is thought-provoking is that he tries his best to explore and tap the strategy of new dimension of things while accepting the reality of urban development in the 20th century.
