Rudmore出版社是在20世纪70年代初由责任总裁托尼·斯通和他的朋友兼合伙人罗格·普雷斯顿创办的。公司最初的房屋是在托尼先生花园的一个大棚子里,第一笔启动资金是由他的父母提供的。在公司经历了一个最艰难的开端之后,在20世纪80年代早期公司已经拥有了自己的基础设施,在20世纪90年代又特意建造了自己的厂房仓库。公司在一个高度竞争的市场中运营并为当地的企业提供多种印刷品。

托尼是一位充满活力的总裁,他认为公司仍处于发展初期。作为一名在当地社区知名的聪明且有魅力的人物,他坚信应该让人们管理自己的职能,否则将会受挫。托尼每天工作很长时间,经常出现随时解决几个重要任务的时候,并且给自己和其他人安排紧密的最后工作期限和表面看上去似乎不可能完成的目标。由于他曾接受很少的正规管理培训,因而他意识到这可能成为他个人发展的不足,但是他却没有找时间去专门学习。他感觉到自己对罗格有道义上和财务上的责任,而罗格这位原先的合伙人现在已成为公司的主要股东

相反,罗格是一个性格内向的人,他将心思都用在了妻子和家庭上。他认为公司的成长太快已经让他感到有些吃不消。当在出版物上把手弄脏时他总感觉这是在家里,实际上他并不想再做营销总监了。事实上,他确定他的工作不包括托尼告诉他的开发新市场和促进销售。托尼最近告诉他招聘并管理一个销售小组,这是罗格梦寐以求的任务。

格里·法尔是位动手型的经理,他最初是一名印刷工人。他在印刷时比在办公室时要快乐得多。托尼已经为格里物色了一个管理课程班,但是格里一直以工作压力太大为由拒绝参加。值得注意的是,格里感觉自己工作很努力,他比其他三人的工作时间都要长,有时候他也有怨恨的情绪,因为他没有公司的股份。

托尼的妻子安西娅在公司负责行政事务性工作。她稳重而且能干,与其丈夫的管理风格形成鲜明的对比。应当承认,她是一个受过训练的婴幼儿教师,没有相关经验,不过为了加强使组织能够向前发展,安西娅非常愿意学习所需的知识。她并不认为自己会永久担当这份工作,她最终还是想回到她原来的角色——照顾她的丈夫和孩子们。

公司内部的沟通是非正式的,经常是通过与个人的谈话而不用书面的备忘录或电子邮件进行。在配送部门和库房也很少有传达的政策或流程。如果组织需要,也是通过非正式的方式来传递这些信息。组织中各级人员的招聘也是通过这种方法进行的。托尼最近在管理杂志上阅读了一篇有关此题目的文章,他非常自豪组织采用了他所谓的“随机方法”。罗格并不同意这种观点,他喜欢凡事井然有序,他想知道自己应该是一个什么样的人,这一点他并不像格里,格里希望自己能够在不受“托尼阻挠”的情况下从事生产工作。
