The number five is of significant importance in Chinese civilization.There are five elements of nature(metal，earth，fire，water，and wood)，five tastes(salty，spicy，bitter，sweet and sour)，five sacred mountains of Daoism，among other examples.
The number eight is also very important.It is significantly conspicuous in legends，myths and various practices.There are the fictional“Eight Immortals，”who represent the eight conditions of life—poverty，wealth，aristocracy，peasantry，age，youth，masculinity，and femininity，as well as the Eight Diagrams，which form the basis for The Book of Changes.The number eight also rhymes with the Chinese word fa，which means getting rich.
Conversely the number four is a very unlucky number because in Chinese it sounds like the word for death.Thus Chinese try to avoid using the number four.
