十六、“whether”与“if”的用法比较

whether与if是我们常见又常用的两个连接词。由于两者都可以表示“是否”，因此在使用时极易混淆。

1. whether和if可以换用的情况

（1）可用whether或if引导位于ask，know，tell，see，wonder，remember，try等词之后的宾语从句，常译为“是否”。例如：

She asked whether/if I had seen him the night before.

她问我头天晚上是否见过他。

I don’t know whether/if he will be able to come.

我不知道他是否能来。

I’ll go there tonight and see if/whether he wants anything.

今晚我要到那里去一下，看看他是不是需要什么东西。

I will try whether/if he can do it.我要试试他能不能做。

I wonder if/whether he is at home.我不知道他是否在家。

（2）动词doubt后接宾语从句，主句为肯定句时用whether或if连接。例如：

I doubt whether/if he can really tell right from wrong.

我怀疑他是否会分辨是非。

I doubt whether/if he was there.

我拿不准他在不在那里。

I doubt if/whether it’s true.

我看这未必是事实。

注　意

主句为否定句或疑问句时，则用that连接；如在肯定句中用that则表示非常怀疑，不大相信，常译为“怀疑”“拿不准”“认为……未必可能”。例如：

I doubt that they will come.

= I am almost sure that they will not come.我看他们未必来。

He did not doubt that she loved him.他确信她爱他。

Do you doubt that he’ll come？你怀疑他会来吗？

（3）在be+ adj.（即doubtful/uncertain/unsure等）

结构之后，既可用whether，也可用if，它们均可译为“怀疑”“不能确定”“不能肯定”。例如：

She is doubtful whether/if he is still alive.

她怀疑他是否还活着。

It is doubtful/uncertain whether/if he will succeed or fail.

他能否成功还说不定。

I’m uncertain whether/if Mary will accept your offer.

我不能肯定玛丽是否会接受你的帮助。

I was uncertain whether/ if your uncle would wish you to know him.我不能确信，你叔叔是否希望你认识他。

（4）whether和if都可与or连用。前者表示对两个不同事物的选择，常译为“是……还是”“不是……就是……”，后者则译为“是否”。例如：

I shall go whether you come with me or stay at home.

不管你和我是去还是留在家里，我都要去。

This light tells you if the machine is on or off.

这个灯告诉你机器在运转。

（5）whether和if都可与or not连用，常译为“是否”。例如：

Tell me whether/if he is at home or not.告诉我他是否在家。

I don’t know whether/if he will come or not.

我不知道他是否会来。

2. whether和if不能换用的情况

在下列情况下，通常用whether，不用if。

（1）引导主语从句时，whether常置于句首，也可用在It s...whether结构中。例如：

Whether you can do scientific research work successfully depends on how hard you work.

你能否搞好科研工作完全看你努力程度如何了。

Whether he will come is uncertain.他是否来还没有确定。

这一句话也可用It is...whether结构。例如：

It is uncertain whether he will come.

It is doubtful whether Is hall go or stay.我的去留还未确定。

（2）引导表语从句时，常用question和problem作主语。例如：

The question is whether he should do it.

问题在于他是否应该做这件事。

The problem is whether he has the ability to do the job.

问题是他是否有干这个活的能力。

（3）引导同位语从句时，跟在proble，question，doubt等词之后的同位语从句，用whether引导；跟在fact，news，truth，idea等词之后的同位语从句，通常由that引导。例如：

We are discussing the problem whether he can join the Party or not.我们正在讨论他能否入党的问题。

The question whether there is life on that planet remains open.

究竟在那个行星上是否有生命，这个问题尚无定论。

There is some doubt whether he will come.他是否来还不一定。

（4）引导介词后的宾语从句时，紧跟在介词之后，例如：

Iam not interested in whether you like the plan or not.

我不在乎你是否喜欢这个计划。

I worry about whether I hurt her feelings.

我担心是否伤了她的感情。

（5）引导让步状语从句时，该从句常由whether...or...或whether...or not引导，有时用逗号与主句隔开，可译为“无论还是”“不管还是”。例如：

All matter，whether it is a solid，a liquid or a gas，is made up of atoms.一切物质，不论它是固体、液体还是气体，都是由原子组成的。

Whether he agrees or not，I shall do that.

不管他同意与否，我都要做。

You must take it whether you like it or not.

不管你喜欢不喜欢，你都必须接受下来。

（6）其后接不定式短语时，常与know，wonder，decide，tell，advise等动词连用，由固定短语whether...or...或whether... or not连接不定式，译为“是……还是（不）……”。例如：

I don’t know whether to acceptor refuse.

我不知道是接受呢，还是拒绝。

She hasn’t decided whether to go or not.

她还没有决定去还是不去。

He wondered whether to come or not.

他不知道究竟来还是不来。

（7）在discuss，care等动词后时，常接句子。例如：

We discussed whether we should set up a library.

我们讨论了是否该建一座图书馆。

I don’t care whether you’ll come or not.我不管你来不来。

（8）在not sure/certain，not make sure/certain等短语后时，常接句子。例如：

I’m not sure whether I’ve met him before.

我不能确定以前是否见过他。

I am not certain whether I can do it.

能不能做，我没有把握。

We could not make certain whether she was safe or not.

我们不能确定她是否脱险。

Can you make sure whether he is on our side？

你能确定是否他站在我们这一边？

（9）在动词wonder后时，表示“请求”，语气比would ou mind...更婉转。例如：

I wonder whether you can tell me something about your family.

不知您能不能给我讲讲有关您家的情况。

I wonder whether I might ask you a question.

不知道可不可以问您一个问题。

（10）whether...or...，whether or no，whether...or not表示“是否”时，o r n o t可以省略，而wh e t h e r o r n o t连用时相当于n either case，意为“无论如何”“不管怎样”“无论是不是”。例如：

You must decide whether you should go or stay.

你必须决定是留还是走。

He asked me whether she was coming（or not）.

他问我她来还是不来。

We must stick to our promise whether or not.

不管怎样，我们必须遵守诺言。
