三、商品说明书的定义、种类及结构

商品说明书是与商品附在一起的一种宣传资料。商品说明书主要用文字、符号、标志、标记、数字或图案等表示，是生产厂家向消费者介绍和说明产品的性质、性能、结构、用途、规格、使用方法、保养、注意事项、质量保证、销售范围、免责声明以及背景资料时使用的一种应用文书。商品说明书有时又称为产品说明书或产品使用手册。在英语中，常有Instructions， Directions， Specifications， Descriptions， Manual和Introduction等与之对应。商品说明书已成为企业宣传自己、推销产品、开拓海内外市场的重要组成部分。

商品说明书一般可以分为工业产品说明书和消费品说明书。就其用途而言，又可分为推销说明书、使用说明书和维修说明书。从内容来看，又可分为用户手册、参考手册、安装手册、维修手册、练习指南等。商品说明书的构成往往视产品的具体情况而定。作为一种特殊的实用文体，商品说明书具有自己独特的语篇结构特征，一般包括标题、正文、结尾、附录等。

标题用来写明商品名称、生产厂家、品牌、注册商标等，如“老四川五香牛肉”、“北京烤鸭”、“Hennessy（V.S.O.P.）”等；有时在品名后加上“说明书”、“Manual”等字样，如“地衣芽孢杆菌活菌胶囊说明书”、“Instruction Manual Model Samsung Er 150”等；有时商品名称后面会添加一个副标题，展示产品的特色或亮点，以吸引消费者，如“HERICIUM ERINACEUS TABLETS—A good remedy for gastropathy （猴菇菌片——胃病的福音）”；有时直接冠以“产品介绍”、“产品简介”、“说明书”、“说明”等字眼。

正文是说明书的核心，主要包括产品的产地、成分、性能、功能、构造、规格、用途、安装（或使用）说明、维护保养、注意事项、技术指标、生产批号及日期等。有时为了达到推销的目的，会在正文开头介绍产品的生产厂家、生产产地、品牌历史典故等方面的背景资料。在工业产品说明书中，为便于消费者安全使用、正确安装调试和保养维护，在介绍工作原理和技术参数时，往往配以结构图、电路图以及外形尺寸图等。

结尾通常写明生产厂家和（或）经销单位名称、地址、电话、传真、电子邮件、邮政编码等信息。当今网络流行时代，为凸显自己，在网页上，有些生产厂家或经销单位还会把自己的联系方式放在正文的前面。

附录一般是指与产品的使用及维护相关的一些资料，如产品附件清单、顾客反馈意见、保修单、维修点等。下面是一则相对较为完整的商品说明书。

四、商品说明书的语言特点

商品说明书旨在用准确明白的语言把产品的情况解说清楚，文体上属于说明文。该体裁要求作者用最短的篇幅、最明白的语言、最直观的手段将信息准确充分地传达给读者，具有提供信息的功能。商品说明书还兼具广告的特征，具有用词准确简洁、句式简单明了、逻辑清楚等特点；在对商品或服务内容进行客观介绍、科学解释的同时，向消费者推销产品、宣传企业。有的商品说明书还能使消费者在阅读说明书、了解产品的过程中产生愉悦感，想象获得产品后的美好（即从视觉到心理上都获得美的享受），具有美感功能。商品说明书具有以下语言特点：

用词特点

商品说明书描述产品的构造、性能、特征、规格、用途、使用方法及警示等。在用词上主要有以下几个特征：

1.简洁明了，能省则省

商品说明书的目的是向消费者介绍有关产品的性能、使用等情况，使有意购买该产品的潜在消费者理解其中的信息，用词简单明了，极少使用“good”，“great”，“high”，“new”等含义空泛的夸饰性形容词。除此以外，商品说明书用词能省则省，如在“Store ALEVOX 59 – 86°F (15–30°C)”中温度前省去了介词“at”；在“RS-485 Communications: Available as an option.（RS-485通信：可选项。）”中省略了主语和谓语动词。再如下面的两个译例中，原文中括号内的部分在译文中都被省略了：

上述数据若表达出现误差或描述错误，将给消费者带来不必要的麻烦，甚至造成财产的损失，也会对厂家的信誉造成负面影响，甚至需要承担法律责任。

术语的规范性主要表现在术语的归约性以及术语的科技性，如花茶（scented tea）不是flower tea，阿胶（donkey-hide gelation）并非ass-skin glue，ass-hide glue，donkey-hide glue等，portable generator（便携式发动机）不译为“便携的发动机”，linear motor （线性电机）不译为“线的电机”。对于说明书中的术语翻译，切忌字面翻译。否则就会出现dog clutch（爪形离合器）译为“狗离合器”的笑话，让消费者不知所云。

3.介于专用科技词汇与普通词汇之间

商品说明书使用的词汇既不同于普通词汇又不同于专用科技词汇。在商品说明书中，除了专业术语外，因为面向普通消费者，一般不使用难度过大的大词（big words），如用pay而不用remuneration；用bloody而不用sanguineous；用feeling而不用sentiment（其中前者为盎格鲁—撒克逊单词，后者为拉丁语派生词）。尽管如此，说明书中使用的单词还是有一定难度的，如sufficient与enough， additional与extra， application与use， assistance与help，purchase与buy等都取前者而不是后者。说明书中一般不用过于口语化的动词短语代替普通科技词汇，因为普通科技词汇语义明确，而动词短语有时多义，甚至易产生歧义。例如：

4.名词当定语现象突出

英语说明书为了表达简洁清晰，通常大量使用名词或名词结构，较为常见的是使用复合名词或名词当定语的名词词组。如：Spin-dryer（脱水机），L-square（直角尺），twist drill（麻花钻），Doppler effect（多普勒效应），human machine interface（人机界面），Input Signal Failure Protection（输入信号断线保护）等。再如：

上述例子中原文为达到简洁的目的，全部使用前置定语的名词结构。如“built-in full-size keyboard”、“78 (U.S.) or 79 (ISO) keys”、“12 function keys”和“4 arrow keys”等。汉语译文也使用了三个前置性定语，如“内置78（U.S.）键或79（ISO）键的全尺寸键盘”、“12个功能键”、“4个方向键”等。

句法特点

商品说明书多使用简单句，较少使用长句或复合句，结构层次明了，语法相对简单灵活。

（1）使用省略句

商品说明书中省略句随处可见，省略形式多种多样。只要意思清楚，层次分明，句子中经常省略冠词、主语、谓语动词等各种成分。有时只保留中心词，表达简单明了。如在下面的标题中就省略了定冠词THE：(THE) INTELLIGENT 1/8 DIN PROCESSOR MONITOR。以下两个例子同样有许多成分省略了（括号内为笔者所加，乃省略部分）。

（2）使用祈使句

商品说明书属于“注意事项”文体（The-Do’s-and-Don’ts Style），广泛使用祈使句是它的突出特点。常用意义明确的动词来牵引全句，如apply，place，remove，take，store，keep，open，replace，avoid，use，stop，reduce，rinse，install，check，adjust，insert，connect，test等，在介绍使用方法或操作方法时更为常见。例如：

上面祈使句分别采用了“take”，“drink”，“light”，“keep”等动词牵引，省略了主语。

（3）使用句式“物化主语+be+形容词（或过去分词或介词）+其他”

商品说明书经常省略人称主语，使句子要么以祈使句的形式出现，要么以产品本身或产品的物化形式（如it，this product等）或产品的具体性能、指标、特征等（如design，feature，capability等）作为主语出现。这就使商品说明书大量使用物化主语规约下、以主动形式或被动形式呈现的套句，即“物化主语+be+形容词（或过去分词或介词）+其他”。常用的结构有：

（4）使用动词的名词化结构来表达动词的概念

名词化结构是由名词化的词（如动作名词、动作性名词、动名词或不定式）加上各种修饰语构成（朱植德，2003:58）。英语商品说明书经常使用这种结构，它在语法上起名词的作用，但实际上表达非常强烈的动作的概念，汉译时往往译成动词，英译时则相反。例如：

常用动词的名词化形式来表示动作的概念的词还有： failure， operation， advancement，adjustment，maintenance，conformity，familiarity，treatment，prevention，protection，introduction，resistance等。

（5）使用假设句

商品说明书是用来介绍产品的概况、使用方法和注意事项等，需要提醒消费者注意，以防使用不当造成财产损失乃至人身安全。因此，商品说明书中常常出现许多假设性的情况，以引起消费者注意。常用的引导词有if，in any case，in case等。例如：

五、商品说明书的翻译原则及注意事项

1.商品说明书的翻译原则

商品说明书的用词一般介于专用科技词汇和普通词汇之间，句式上多为简单句，一般使用陈述句，有时使用祈使句，重点在于描述产品的特征，告知消费者产品的使用方法，提醒消费者应该注意的事项。因此，说明书的语言一般平实客观，通俗易懂，翻译时需要注意传达原文的风格特点。一般情况下运用直译法可以比较忠实地传达原文的意义，但是由于英汉语言的差异，对于有些类型的说明书（比如化妆品等）的翻译，在准确传达原文意义的基础上，还需要注意美感取向在译文中的实现。

商品说明书属于科技文体的范畴。科技翻译不仅要再现原作的科学性，还要讲究翻译的艺术性。根据商品说明书的语言及其功能特点，我们认为商品说明书的翻译既要“准确规范、通顺简练”，也要兼顾“美学取向”原则。例如下面的两个译例就较好地体现了说明书的翻译原则：

2.商品说明书翻译应注意的事项

在翻译商品说明书时，还应注意以下事项：

（1）了解相关的背景知识。

商品说明书在说明产品的性能、规格等概况时有时会对产品本身或产品的产地或企业自身等方面进行一番描述，涉及产品的悠久历史、企业的规模和名望、产地的特殊性等方面，有时还涉及相关的文化知识。翻译时译者需要查找相关的背景资料，了解相关的背景知识，否则很容易出错，译文很难达到说明书所要获得的效果。请看以下例子：

原文说明青春宝是明朝永乐太医院的宫廷用方，历史悠久且配方独特。考虑到受众为英美读者，若没有对“Yongle”或“the Ming Dynasty”进行相应的解释，他们会很难获得与中国读者一样的感受，无法了解产品的效果。翻译时最好能查找相关资料，对涉及的文化意涵进行相应的增补，即明朝为1368年到1644年，“永乐”是朱元璋的第四子成祖朱棣（1360-1424）于1402年即位时所取的年号。成祖朱棣1421年迁都北京，并下令编纂了著名的《永乐大典》。因为明朝的时间跨度较大，所以可选择在永乐后补上时间，即“the third emperor’s reign (1360-1424)”。

译文把“新疆”译成“Xinjiang Province”，表明了译者对新疆是个民族自治区的背景情况不甚了解。这种忽视文化背景的译文很容易产生政治性错误，引起麻烦。应该译成“Xinjiang Uygur [Uighur] Autonomous Region”。若版面允许，也可以适当解释一下新疆的伊犁地区是世界上著名的薰衣草生产基地之一。

（2）熟悉英汉语言差异

要做好商品说明书的英汉互译，首先必须熟悉英汉两种语言的差异。比如，汉语的“说明书”对应的英文有Instructions，Directions，Specifications，Descriptions，Manual和Introduction等。但它们的用法有所不同。Introduction用法最广；Instructions原意指“指示”、“指导”，引申表示“操作指南”、“用法说明”，如maintenance instructions（维修说明）；directions原意指“指示”，引申表示“说明”，尤其指药物使用说明，如Full directions inside.（内有详细说明。）； specifications本义为“规格”，引申表示“规格说明”、“详细说明”，如technical specifications（技术说明）；descriptions本义为“描写”，引申表示“说明”，如product descriptions（产品说明或说明书），有时用description of goods（货描）表示；manual 一般表示较多说明的小册子（李太志、高明，2009:282）。

在翻译商品说明书时，还需要注意以下几个方面的调整或转换。

首先，注意汉语的动词与英语的动词名词化形式的转换。英语说明书经常使用名词化结构表达动作的概念，翻译时注意把它们译成相应的汉语动词，如：

原文中的“treatment”、“prevention”、“unfamiliarity”、“judgment”和“lack”为名词形式，汉译时译成动词。

其次，根据汉英的逻辑差异进行调整。由于汉英语言差异，汉语往往在叙述过程中逻辑重点在后面出现。在翻译成英语时，要注意正确处理逻辑重点在句子中的位置，妥善处理主句与从句的关系。例如：

汉语原文逻辑重点应是“系重庆传统地方特产，久享盛名的特产”，“始创于1937年”只是说明其历史悠久，起补充说明的作用。因此，翻译时应该把逻辑重点作为句子的主要框架处理，处理成“主谓”式的句子结构。上述两种译文中，相对而言，译文2比译文1简洁，符合说明书简洁明晰的特点，但是两种译文对于句子逻辑重点的处理都欠妥。

修改译文

This product, which first came into market in 1937，is a traditional local one with a high reputation in Chongqing.

此外，翻译商品说明书时还要注意根据说明书针对的消费者群体的不同，进行相应的调整。比如在翻译长度、温度等计量单位时需要调整顺序:英语中常把“inch（英寸）”、“foot（英尺）”、“pound（磅）”、“Fahrenheit（华氏）”等置前，汉译时却要放在后面：

（3）积累常用词句，建立学习语料库

商品说明书中有许多词句出现的频率较高，如available, suitable, expose等。例如在一份“330R过程检测器”的说明书中就出现了许多含“available”的句子：A.RS-485 Communications: Available as an option.（RS-485通信：可选项。）B.Square root linearization is available.（平方根线性化。）

C.Two levels of access are available: restricted and full.（有两个等级：限制级和完全级。）

又如，豆类产品中有各种各样的“豆”，它们相应的英文表达种种不同：绿豆（mung been）、巴豆（croton）、黑豆（black soyabeans）、扁豆（lentils）、豌豆（peas）、蚕豆（broad beans；horse bean）、芸豆（kidney beans）、豇豆（black-eyed pea；cowpea；China bean）等。其中豇豆又可分为长豇豆（asparagus bean）、红豇豆（red cowpeas）、印度豇豆（common cowpea）等。生活中我们也会遇到各种各样的“粉”：食品中的面粉（wheat flour）、薯粉（potato starch）、玉米淀粉（corn starch）、藕粉（lotus root powder）、米粉（rice noodles）、河粉（fried rice noodles）、鲜虾粉（shrimp powder）以及化妆品中的粉底（foundation）、粉扑（powder puff）等。“保质期”也有不同的英文表达，如“shelf life”，“duration”，“pull date”，“date of expiry”，“guaranteeing quality for a certain period”等，但它们的用法并非完全相同：“shelf life”主要指食品或药品等放在货架上供销售的质量保证期限;“pull date”侧重于指在易坏的食品包装袋上注明的质量保证期，意思是在保质期前撕开或扯开包装袋食用；而“date of expiry”指“失效日期”，常用于药品等方面。总之，要做好商品说明书的翻译，译者需要学会利用网络资源查询资料，并在翻译过程中注意总结归纳，建立自己的学习语料库，积累有用的表达方法。

Beijing Duck

六、翻译知识拓展

我国当前食品外包装翻译中存在的问题（上）

随着中国加入世贸组织和改革开放的深化，中国经济逐步实现与世界经济的接轨。越来越多的中国商品进入国际市场。在这一过程中，商品的外包装在市场开拓和商品促销中起着重要作用，越来越多的产品外包装上开始出现了英汉对照的说明书。外包装上的英文说明书一方面能够促进中国产品融入国际市场，但是另一方面，说明书的英文翻译质量也不容忽视。只有高质量的翻译才能帮助提升中国企业和产品的形象，劣质翻译只能起负面作用。

笔者对某大型超市的货架商品进行了实地调查，总共收集了30篇商品外包装译文①作为语料。范围限定在食品领域，涉及面食、饮品、营养品、酱菜、蜜饯等。译文内容包括品名、配料、营养成分、食用（饮用）方法、保存（贮存、储藏）方法、保质期、生产日期、卫生许可证号、生产商等等。其中有10份为中外合资企业或外商独资企业产品包装译文，另外20份为中国国有企业或私营企业产品外包装译文。笔者对收集的30份食品外包装汉英对照译文进行了总结，发现主要存在以下五个方面的翻译错误：

一、拼音问题

调查中发现，大量产品依然使用汉语拼音形式。包括两种情况：通篇使用拼音和拼音、英语混杂。前一种比较少见，多存在于国内小型企业产品包装上。后种情况则分布广泛，某些知名产品包装上也常见到。

1.通篇使用拼音：

某品牌的碧螺春茶叶外包装上从品名、配料、保存条件到生产商，完全使用拼音：

配料：碧螺春茶叶 Pei Liao: Bi Luo Chun Cha Ye;

保存条件：尽量通风干燥保存Bao Cun Tiao Jian: Yinliangtongfengganzaobaocun used by

Storage instructions: Store in a cool, dry place.

Some of the best bits may have settled at the bottom of the pack, so please shake gently before opening to spread them around.

To keep this cereal fresh once open, roll the bag down before storing.

For best before end date,

See base of pack.

This cereal is packaged in a protective atmosphere.

某品牌面包也是直接用拼音：

无糖切片面包：Wutangqiepianmianbao 港式奶皇面包：gangshinahuangmianbao

2.拼音、英语混杂

这种情况多体现在产品名称和生产商名称上。包装正面用拼音，包装反面的说明用英文。这种情况本来也无可厚非，问题在于前后的名称不一致。很容易误导消费者。

例如：某品牌的杭白菊，包装正面用拼音： HANGBAIJU；反面则用： Hangzhou White Chrysanthemum；其生产商：黄山市徽州茶叶有限公司，则拼成HUANGSHANSHI HUNZHOUCHAYEYOUXIANGONGSI。

上述几例中很明显的问题就是各字母间不空格，直接罗列拼音。汉语拼音本来在国际市场上就几乎无法通行，这样简单的加以汉语拼音的产品说明，对于外国消费者根本就没有任何意义，同不翻译没有区别，反而增加了消费者阅读的困难。因此笔者建议加强外销产品包装的英文化，取消以汉语拼音代替翻译的现象。

二、拼写及语法错误

在汉英翻译中最为常见的就是各种各样的拼写错误和语法错误。段连城将这种现象称为“甲型病状”①，此类现象在食品包装翻译中可谓随处可见。常见的有拼写遗漏、大小写混乱、主谓语的不一致、冠词介词使用错误等。这有可能是翻译的问题，也可能是排版印刷的不负责任、粗心马虎。

1.单词拼写错误及遗漏，例如：

某话梅产品名译为：Name of prodnct, 后面的说明中又出现 Prodct这样的错误。

开封后请短期内食用。

Consume it soon aften unsealing it.尚且不讨论译法是否正确，但看这样的粗心马虎，就不可原谅。

2.大小写混乱，书写不规范

A.某产品的生产日期译为：The date Of Production，应改为：Date of Production

B.某榨菜：本品为原料。用于面点、扣肉及各类蒸、炒、汤菜的调味，荤素皆宜。

This product is staple.apply for noodles, steamed pork, braise, sauces, soups, vegetable, meat or fish all edible.

本句很明显是字字对译，文理不通。Apply位于句首，却不大写。

C.北京新月亮食品销售有限责任公司

Beijing New Moon Food products Selling Co., Ltd

其他单词首字母都大写，products却小写。建议改为：Beijing New Moon Food Sales Co., Ltd

3.语法错误

语料分析中，笔者发现该类错误可谓比比皆是，很多大品牌、名产品也存在相当多的语法错误，例如：Salads to go...Tenderleaf and rocket:

A.某品牌绿鸟鸡：食用方法：开袋即食Edible method: After open the package该例中，用edible 来修饰method 就很有问题。“Edible”means“something fit to be eaten”，怎么能用来修饰method? 后面的open显然是语法错误。

B.某品牌干果：阴凉处避光：in the cool place avoids the sunlight，应改为：avoiding

C.某品牌话梅王：请保持环境清洁。Keep our environmental clean

D.某虾皮：本品已烤熟，可即食、做汤、凉拌等，吃法较为广泛。

三、标签译名混乱，不统一，不规范

此类错误主要体现在商品标签信息翻译上。商品的标签相当于商品的通行证，在于简明扼要的介绍商品的主要内容和相关信息，主要包括以下内容：品名，配料，营养成分，保质期，贮存方法，食用（饮用）方法，卫生许可证号，生产日期，生产商等等。遗憾的是，即使是很多知名厂家生产的产品，其标签信息的翻译也是错误百出。请看下表统计信息。
