本文介绍美国近20年明清小说翻译和研究的英译情况。美国学者在这一领域有不少收获，值得注意；也有许多盲点，前景并不乐观。大部分小说已经（或即将）有了出色或至少可读的译本、专门的讨论，也有重要且有趣的作品未得到重视。比较研究和主题研究日趋流行，但数量还不多，通常局限于比较有限的几本小说，着重分析某个作者的作品中不同方面的相互联系的整体性研究也十分罕见。可喜的是越来越多的北美学者开始用中文发表著作，越来越多的英文出版物正通过翻译获得第二次生命，有利于跟国内同行的交流。可忧的是从事明清小说研究的学者数量本就有限，又随着学术思潮和教学需要的改变而日渐减少，或朝文化研究转向。今后的可能是，明清小说研究便利性大大提高，但教授、研究和学习的老师和学生却大大减少，因而对这一领域研究成果的期待恐怕不能太高。
This is a status report on English translations of Chinese fictions from Ming to Qing Dynasty in the past 20 years in North America.While quite significant achievement are made by American scholars，the current picture is neither full or balanced and the future is not so bright.Most important works have been translated into great or fair editions，and lot of researches have been done on specific titles or topics，but many equally important and interesting works have not been looked into.More and more American scholars published their researches in Chinese，or have their works been translated into Chinese，which benefits the exchange between the American scholars and their Chinese counterparts.However，we have a situation in which facilities for the study of Ming and Qing fiction are rapidly improving，and in which the total number of teachers of Chinese language and culture is increasing，but the faculty engaged in teaching and researching Ming and Qing fiction is shrinking.Therefore，we may not expect to see dramatic output from scholars of this field in the North America.
相对欧洲而言，美国汉学的历史不长，又以现、当代中国研究，特别是社会、政治、经济、历史等学科为重，于是有“中国学”一说，以示区别。以致极端之言，说美国东亚系的中国语言文学课只教说话了。其实不然，就中国文学作品的翻译而言，从1830年开始，在这块园地里耕耘的美国学者前赴后继，成果也相当可观。本文不可能细说从头，包罗万象，一方面限于篇幅，只好厚今薄古，择要而述，以近年的新发展为主；另一方面也没有必要，因国内已有了一些这方面的专著，如《汉籍外译史》[2]和《中国古典小说戏曲名著在国外》[3]，罗列爬梳，尚称完备，虽不尽善尽美，已足供参考，本文旨在补缺拾遗。[4]
