1888年，上海海关总检察官、德裔美国汉学家夏德（Friedrich Hirth，1845—1927）的作品Wên-chien Tzi-chüju-men Notes on the Chinese documentary style《文件字句入门》出版，在书的序言部分作者说明了写作原因：
Stimulating students of the Chinese Business style in making a systematic study of the rules governing this branch of written language.
与其他作品不同的是，作者在该书中强调了在语言应用过程中理解和认识语法规则的重要性，关于这一点作者对法国汉学家儒莲（Stanislas Julien，1797？—1873）的作品Syntaxe nouvelle de la langue chinoise（《汉文指南》）给予了高度评价，认为这是一部语言学习的入门指导。
从《文件字句入门》的内容可以看出，它并不是一本完整而系统的语法书：
The author wishes it to be understood that his work does not replace a complete grammar，but that its chief object is to persuade the reader to make grammatical observations himself and to gradually lead him into the habit of tracing the rule where rule exists.
尽管如此，作品的性质一方面具有参考语法书的结构，另一方面也具有教材的特色，即说明若干例子的简捷语法解释，其中包括语言结构、理解方式参考等，通过简单说明中文的语法现象，尽可能地将书中出现的大量例子解释清楚。该书有plurality and totality（复数与整体）、grammatical agents（语法主体）、numeral phrases（量词短语）。
很多章节中使用不同的拉丁文举例，这些例子都配有中文释义，也就是在汉语语法中对应的情况。还有一些题为subject（主格）、object（宾格）、genitive（属格）和dative（与格）的章节，这些章节中的语法部分则配有大量例子进行解释。比如在plurality and totality一章中就出现了如下例子：
此外，作品中还出现了大量被作者定义为“商务类型”语句的翻译释疑，原文和释疑一般以交替翻译形式出现，例如：
正如我们所看到的那样，书中出现的例词一般都是出现在行政和外交领域的专有名词，这是与作者本身的职业以及序言中说明过的理由——让外国官员能够在没有翻译帮助的情况下自主阅读和书写中文——相关联的。序言部分曾提到：
Students having managed the spoken language to a certain extent，and being able to express their thoughts fluently，frequently get disgusted with the difficulties of the written language and are only too ready to take refuge in that pons asinorum，the native writer，who will interpret the sense of difficult passages in plain colloquial withoutbeing able to analyse the construction of even the simplest sentence（...）The danger of becoming thus dependent upon the intelligence of a native assistant is obvious.
