Dongshan Fengdongshi Rock

Hello everyone! You may have heard about the Fengdongshi Rock,or the Wind-moved Rock,on Dongshan Island.People always say,“A trip to Dongshan is not complete without a visit to Fengdongshi Rock”.As the old saying goes,“seeing is believing”.Today I’ll take you to see this unusual rock.

This is the west gate of Tongshan Ancient City.Around the gate, you’ll see the rock honored as the No.1 Odd Rock in the country.

Fengdongshi Rock is a huge rock standing on a steep cliff. It is 4.3 meters tall, about 4.5 meters wide,4.7 meters long, and weights around 200 tons.Miraculously, the interface between such a huge stone and the rock under it is only several inches wide. When heavy wind comes, the rock just wobbles slightly and balances itself quite well. This is because the stone’s center of gravity is lo wand happens to fall on the interface. The stone therefore moves like a tumbler.

Let’s go around the Wind-moved Rock.Imagine, when a heavy wind comes, will you be brave enough to stand by the wobbling rock?

On the face of the stone, you will see an inscription on the stone by a noted local celebrity over 300 years ago.The inscription presents:“Three loyal officials from Tongshan:Huang Daozhou,Chen Bin,and Chen Shiqi”.Another inscription to the right was handwritten by Chairman Mao.It says“The scenery here is uniquely great!”

Ladies and gentlemen,we’re now in Dongshan Museum. The 3-floored museum was built in 1995 with a floor space of1400 square meters. In the exhibition room for the prehistoric cultural relationship between Fujian and Taiwan, exhibits and photos take us back to ancient times. The 57.9-millimeter fossil of ancient human bone, found in Dongshan in 1987,is 10 thousand years old. This proves that human activities existed in today’s Fujian coastal area around 10 thousand years ago. Some exhibits show that the prehistoric human and ancient animals migrated from Fujian to Taiwan through a land bridge over the Taiwan Straits. Also in display are stoneware, copper ware, potteries, china ware, jade, wood carvings, and a canoe drifting from Taiwan.

Outside the museum,we can see a huge rock. Some say it looks like a devout worshiping monk kneeling before a stone pagoda. What do you think?

This is Huang Daozhou Museum.A native of Zhangzhou,Huang was a famous Confucian master, calligrapher, astronomer and Neo-Confucianist in the Ming Dynasty around 300 years ago,and served as minister of the imperial government. The gifted scholar studied very hard from his boyhood and later became a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations. His official career was rather bumpy, and in his later years,Huang volunteered to lead troops in a war against the Qing government.Unfortunately, his soldiers were outnumbered and he eventually was captured and killed at the age of 62.In the museum you can learn his stories and academic research on him.

This is Dongshan’Guandi Temple, the Memorial Temple of Lord Guan.Lord Guan was a strategist during the Period of the Three Kingdoms about 1900 years ago.He was well known for his loyalty, righteousness, benevolence and courage among Chinese people. This temple was built around 700 years ago,and is under state protection.

Look at the 6 stone posts supporting the crisscrossing arched girders in the pavilion.Over hundreds of years, these posts remained in good condition despite countless earthquakes and typhoons. The rooftops are decorated with color porcelain sculptures characteristic of South Fujian.Various traditional designs and historical stories are depicted in the art formof the traditional handcrafts.

The Guandi Temple in Dongshan is the originating temple of many Guandi temples in Taiwan. The Guandi statue in this temple was invited for a tour around Taiwan in 1995 and was warmly welcomed there.

Now let’s step in.The right gate of the main shrine is called the dragon gate, and left one,the tiger gate.In the middle sits Lord Guan’s statue, surrounded by statues of 4 of his warriors. The plaque hanging above was written by an emperor of the Qing Dynasty, appreciating Lord Guan’s greatness.

Here is a sea-water-corroded cave called Hukong Cave,or the Tiger Mouth Cave, simply because it looks like a tiger’s open mouth.Glittering spring water drops between stones all the year round in the cave. The 15-meter long cave can shelter dozens of people. In hot summer days, you can have a cup of tea here and enjoy the breezes from the sea!

Our last stop today is the ancient city of Tongshan which was built in 1387 as a defense against Japanese pirates and enemies of the Ming Dynasty. The circumference of the ancient city used to be long, with 4 gates in each direction. The east gate is the only gate that is well kept.

It was here that the national hero Qi Jiguang and his soldiers fought against the Japanese pirates twice, and that General Zheng Chenggong, another national hero, used to build ships and train his navies.Tongshan Ancient city witnessed the Dongshan people’s heroic resistance to foreign aggression.

Ladies and gentlemen, that’s all for today’s tour.Thank you very much and I hope you’ve had an unforgettable tour of Zhangzhou!
