11.3.3　《美国传统英语词典》

《美国传统英语词典》是由莫里斯编辑并于1969年出版的;其修订版(即大学第2版)出版于1982年(主编未列出)。这部由美国传统出版公司(American Heritage Publishing Company)出版的词典令人耳目一新，已经成为《韦氏新大学词典》有力的竞争对手。值得一提的是，这家公司还是美国历史杂志《美国传统》(American Heritage)、文化艺术季刊《地平线》(Horizon)及其他一系列图书的出版商。

在一些做法上，这部词典是有一定开创性的。例如，为了确定大约600个精选词的用法标准，由大约100名著名作家、记者、教授、议员等组成用法评判小组，把他们的正面(好的用法)和反面(不好的用法)观点用百分数的形式记录下来(就如同为候选人投票一样)。一些评论还以引文的形式被记录下来。

下面就是一个这样的例子:

在词源处理上，编者一直把词源追溯到印欧词根，这些词根同派生词一起被列于词典的末尾。虽然叫“传统词典”，但是编者并没有因循守旧，自1969年首次出版时开始，编者就把长期被排除在通用词典外的禁忌语收录了进来，这一做法后来逐渐被其他大学词典所效仿。另外，这部词典还包含大量图片(总共有4000余幅)，放在页边的空白位置。
