Higher education at the undergraduate level includes two-year junior colleges and four-year colleges and universities.Many colleges and universities also offer graduate programs，leading to a Master's or Ph D degree.To obtain a bachelor's degree，students are required to study four years;to obtain a master's degree，two or three years;and to obtain a Ph D degree，three years.
Before 1989 all students who entered an institution of higher education were guaranteed employment upon graduation.Following 1989 students were no longer guaranteed employed.They instead needed to look for work and have their academic records scrutinized by prospective employers and then be interviewed by them.The practice of giving students some options in jobhunting is called“mutual selection”or“free marriage.”In this case，graduating students as well as potential employers are now able to make their own choices.This helps ensure that both parties are satisfied.
Most Chinese universities and colleges are now engaged in international academic exchanges in order to obtain a better understanding of higher education and scientific development abroad.At the same time，they are showing off China's achievements in these areas to the rest of the world.
