The Chinese primary education system generally mandates that students study for six years，with some schools offering five years.According to the Nine-Year Compulsory Education Law，primary and junior middle schools are tuition-free and located so as to make it easy and convenient for students to attend school.
Children begin schooling when they are six to seven years old.They attend primary schools in their neighbourhoods or villages.Parents pay a small fee per term for books and other expenses such as transportation，food，and heating.
The primary-school curriculum consists of Chinese，mathematics，physical education，music，drawing，and elementary instruction in nature，history，and geography，combined with practical work experiences around the school compound.A foreign language is taught when children are in the third grade in some schools.
