The Chinese government attaches great importance to preschool education.In cities and towns，educational departments，government organizations，enterprises，sub-district offices or individuals operate kindergartens or day-care centers.In rural areas，towns and villages sponsor kindergartens.
Kindergartens fall into three grades:The junior grade admits children at the age of three to four years old;the middle grade，four to five;and the senior，five to six.Nurseries take care of children under three.A variety of classes are offered，including elementary reading，writing，and arithmetic，as well as music，art and physical education.
