Laoshi，the Chinese words for a teacher at any level，is not merely a designation of social rank and function，but a term signifying considerable respect and deference.Perhaps the greatest difference between Chinese laoshi and American professors is the quality of the relationships they tend to have with their students.In China，laoshi is expected to take a strong interest in the development of each student as a whole person.To a certain extent，the laoshi's role overlaps that of the student's parents.The role of a lao shi is jiaoshu yuren(教书育人)，which is literally translated as“to teach and to educate(nurture，bring up)people.”
