In ancient China，the retirement system only applied to government officials and officers.In Zhou Dynasty，officials were required to retire at the age of 70.In Han Dynasty，the retirement arrangement began to merge into the official bureaucratic system，and this continued until Ming Dynasty.Between the Ming and Qing dynasties，officials commonly retired at the age of 60.
Different dynasties provided different amounts of old-age pension.Several things determined how much of a pension retired officials would receive.These included the individual's age，official status，and contributions to the government.In the Han Dynasty pensions that amounted to 1/3 pre-retirement salary could be given to those whose annual salary was equivalent to 2，000 shi(石)of grain and above.Shi is a unit of dry measure for grain equal to 100 litres.During the Tang Dynasty the court government granted retired officials land that could be inherited down to the later generations.
