The traditional family was much influenced by Confucian philosophy.The Confucian ethic placed major emphasis on proper conduct in specific relationships.The generations established a hierarchy，which outlined the demands and privileges of each.Every member understood how he fit into that pattern.
In theory，this accorded with the Confucian principle of filial obedience—children to parents，especially son to father.The theory is embodied in the“three bonds(三纲)，”which established the relationship between the superior and the subordinate in the family and the state—the bond of loyalty on the part of subject to ruler;the bond of filial obedience on the part of son to father(children to parents);and the bond of chastity on the part of wives(but not of husbands).
