Seeking Hosting Family

American Intercultural Student Exchange（AISE）is a non-profit，tax-exempt，educational foundation whose purpose is to encourage world peace through student exchange．Over 4，000 students and host families participate in many AISE programs each year．By opening your home to a student from another country，your family will be enriched in many ways．//

AISE is seeking qualified host families for an amazing adventure．The adventure is to have a young adult，age 15-18 years of age，from another country，live in your home for one to two semesters of next school year．These students come from a wide range of countries and they want to learn about us，Americans，the American way of life and to improve their English skills．They all speak English and are good students in their own countries．Each student goes through a screening before being accepted to come to America．The students will arrive in August and leave in June and they will attend the public schools while they are here．They are all responsible for their own expenses for clothing，entertainment，school supplies，medical，and phone．//

As a host family，we ask that you provide the food for your new son or daughter when he or she is at home．You will also need to supply a bed for only your student，and to accept your student as a family member and not as a guest．A host family can be small or large．It can be a single parent or just a single adult．There is a host family application to be filled out，and a background check will be done．//

Hosting a student will allow you and your family a first hand look into another culture．You'll make memories that will last a lifetime，and establish friendships that span the miles between countries．//

China's Confucius Institutes Popular across the World

The Second Confucius Institute Conference opened on Tuesday in Beijing，gathering delegates from the Confucius Institutes around the world．Almost all the delegates at the conference recited，“It is such a delight to have friends coming from afar，”the famous saying of Kongzi，the ancient Chinese philosopher whom the Confucius Institute was named after．This conference focused on exchanging experiences of Chinese language teaching between China and foreign experts in an attempt to promote cooperation and teaching quality．//

To promote Chinese language and culture，China started to host the Confucius Institutes in 2004．In July，2006，when the first conference was held，there were 80 Confucius Institutes in 36 countries and regions．So far，the number has risen to 210 in 64 countries and regions．In addition，more than 20 organizations from 61 countries have applied to open Confucius Institutes．It is estimated that the number of the institute will arrive at more than 500 all over the world by 2010．The numbers of faculty members and students in Confucius Institutes worldwide have broken 1，000 and 46，000 respectively．//

Confucius Institutes offer a platform of cross-culture communication and friendship．Courses on Chinese tea culture and Tai Ji Quan，offered at the institute，are always over-subscribed．Local residents are expecting more practical and interesting Chinese courses．The Principal of the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom，said that the Confucius Institute helped strengthen China-Britain friendly cooperation and deepened British people's understanding of Chinese culture．The university's Confucius Institute has offered Chinese language courses at different levels and special programs，for example for company employees，government officials．It has also organized a Chinese film festival．//

Statistics from Chinese Ministry of Education show that currently 30 million people overseas are learning Chinese and the figure may hit 100 million by 2010．The Confucius Institute has helped promote the concept of a harmonious world proposed by the Chinese people and has become a window to display Chinese culture to the outside world，and a bridge to strengthen mutual understanding between peoples．//

Though Confucius Institutes are on the rise，they still have a long way to go to become outstanding educational institutions，as there are not enough qualified teachers，let alone well-compiled textbooks．Teaching Chinese culture and Chinese language in a totally foreign environment is also a new topic to educationalists both at home and abroad．//
