第七节　英语长句的翻译

英语和汉语是两种不同的语言，但在句子结构上毕竟还有相同点，大体上都具有是“主、谓、宾”的基本框架。只要英语句子可以按其原有的成分排列顺序转换成结构大体相同的汉语句子，翻译时就应当照办，而不必另起炉灶，更不能随意偏离翻译的基本原则，把翻译当作释义。

在翻译长句时要按汉语的表达方式来处理英语句子里错综复杂的关系。处理方法大致可归纳为两种：一种是基本上按英语原句的结构顺序翻译，另一种是按汉语的时间顺序和逻辑顺序翻译。

1）用顺序译法来翻译长句

有些英语长句叙述的一连串动作按发生的时间先后安排，或按逻辑关系安排，汉语的表达方式比较一致，可按原文顺序译出。

例：In international buying and selling of goods,there are a number of risks,which,if they occur,will involve traders in financial losses.

译文：（在）国际贸易货物的买卖（中）存在着各种各样的风险，这些风险的发生将会给（有关的）商人们带来经济损失。

说明：按意群的关系，该句可以拆分为四部分：

①“in international buying and selling of goods”这是本句中的地点状语。

②“there are a number of risks”这是本句的主要结构，“there be”结构，也是本句的主干。

③“which,if they occur,will involve traders in financial losses”这是带有条件从句的非限定性定语从句，句子中“which”修饰先行词“risks”，“they”是条件从句中的主语代表前面的“risks”。原文各句的逻辑关系，表达次序与汉语基本一致，因此可以按原文顺序译出。

例：The Buyer shall be entitled to send his inspectors at his own expense to the Seller’s country to join the Seller’s representatives in the quality inspection and test of the Equipment and Materials in the manufacturers workshops.

译文：买方有权自行出资派遣检验人员到卖方国家，会同卖方代表一起在制造方的车间对设备和材料的质量进行检验和测试。

说明：根据意群的关系本句可以拆分成：

①“the Buyer”，这是本句的主语。

②“shall be entitled to send”，这是本句谓语。

③“his inspectors”，这是本句的宾语。

④“at his own expense”，这是本句中“send”的方式状语。

⑤“to the Seller’s country”，是本句中“send”的地点状语。

⑥“to join the Seller’s representatives”，这是“send”的目的状语。

⑦“in the quality inspection and test of the Equipment and Materials in the manufacturers workshops”，整个这个短语都做“join”的地点状语。

由于这一句的排列同汉语的排列很相似，故可以采用顺序译法来翻译。顺序译法指按时间的先后顺序、逻辑的先后顺序安排翻译。由于这种译法与汉语的表达顺序基本相同，差别不大，译者完全可以做到递序而下。

2）用逆序译法来翻译长句

“逆序译法”又称“倒置译法”，主要指由于英汉两种语言在表达方面存在着差异，有些译文的句子就出现了前后倒置问题。这些句子在翻译时按照目标语国家的语言习惯重新组合，在组合过程中，原文的一些语句顺序将被打乱。这是因为汉语在叙述动作时一般按照动作发生的先后顺序排列，而英语在叙述动作时，更多的是使用各种语法手段将动作的先后顺序打乱。这就要求我们必须从原文的后面译起，逆着原文的顺序翻译。这种译法通常称之为逆序译法。

说明：逆序法在长句的翻译中，我们可根据不同的情况按意群进行全部逆序或部分逆序。

例：The Owner may request the removal and replacement of any person employed,in accordance with the Contractor,if such person on the Site is guilty of misconduct,incompetence or negligence,and ensure the accomplishment of the project.

译文：为了保证工程完成，若业主认为工地上承包商的雇员品行不端，不能胜任工作或者有失职行为，可按照本合同，要求承包商将此人调离或更换。

说明：为了符合汉语原因在前结果在后的语言习惯，我们将在原句中首先出现的结果“the Owner may request the removal and replacement of any person employed”部分放到了译文句子的末尾，而将从句部分“such person on the Site is guilty of misconduct,incompetence or negligence”放到了前面。这种句子的排列符合汉语的语言习惯。

例：The Seller shall not be responsible for the delay of shipment or non-delivery of the goods due to Force Majeure,which might occur during the process of manufacturing or in the course of loading or transit.

译文：凡在制造或装船运输过程中，因不可抗力致使卖方不能或推迟交货时，卖方不负责任。

说明：这里原文的行文方式是把信息的重心放在句首，先表明卖方的免责事项“The Seller shall not be responsible for the delay of shipment or non-delivery of the goods”，接着再规定由于什么原因引起的不能交货或延迟交货才会免责“due to Force Majeure”，而对不可抗力又做了限定“which might occur during the process of manufacturing or in the course of loading or transit”。而按照汉民族的思维习惯，我们往往是先谈原因，再讲结论。因此，翻译时译者应采用逆序的方法将原文表示免责条件的“due to Force Majeure，which might…of loading or transit”移到句首。再者，英语中的非限制性定语从句“which might occur…of loading or transit”翻译成中文时，可以仍翻译成定语放在所修饰的词之前，也可处理为别的成分。

3）分译法

分译法就是将原文一个句子分成几个句子来翻译，或者将其中某个较长的修饰成分单独翻译成一句或几句。当英语长句中的主句与从句、或介词短语及分词短语等有多层意思且所修饰的词与词之间的关系不是很密切，并且各具有相对的独立意义时，如果采用一个汉语句子对原文进行翻译，容易导致句义混乱，此时我们可根据汉语一个小句表达一层意思的习惯，对原文的各个意思层进行分解，再按时间顺序、逻辑顺序安排，可增减适当的词语以便于短句之间的衔接。这样做也符合汉语多用短句的习惯，同时也可以使句子意思表达得更清楚明了。

例：Either Party may terminate the contract in case of failure on the part of the other Party to fulfill or perform any of its obligations hereunder and in the event that such failure remains unremedied sixty(60)days after the service of a written notice as described in Article X below by the non-defaulting Party to the other Party specifying the failure in question and requiring it to be remedied.

译文：如果一方未完成或未履行其在本合同项下的任何义务，而且未按照下述第X条规定在另一方向其送达书面通知，指出其违约行为并要求其予以改正后六十（60）天内，其仍未予以改正，另一方则可以终止本合同。

说明：原文是商务合同中有关期限和终止的条款，按照先讲结论，即合同任一方具有的权利“Either Party may terminate the contract”然后再列举实施此权利的条件“in case of failure...and in the event that...”的顺序行文。而汉语的行文习惯往往是先条件后结论，所以译文在整体上应采用逆序法。即：违约行为60天内未改正，60天是从无责任方书面通知送达之日算起，书面通知中无责任方已指出对方违约行为并要求其改正等等。如不对内容进行分解，则可能导致句义混乱。因此，翻译此句时应采用分译法，将原文意思表述清楚。

例：In Italy,the question of title is further confused by the fact that everyone with a university degree can be called Dottore—and engineers,lawyers and architects may also expect to be called by their professional titles.

译文：在意大利，任何人只要有大学学位就可以被称为博士，这使头衔的问题更让人糊涂。工程师、律师和建筑设计师也会要求别人以他们的职业头衔来称呼他们。

说明：该句可以拆分为三部分：“In Italy,the question of title is further confused by the fact/that everyone with a university degree can be called Dottore/and engineers,lawyers and architects may also expect to be called by their professional titles.”在翻译这个句子时我们将同位语从句“that everyone with a university degree can be called Dottore”的翻译前提，打乱了原来的语言顺序。将原来的主语部分“the question of title is further confused by the fact”同原来的部分分开翻译。这里我们采用了逆序法的翻译方法。但是，对于原句中的“and engineers,lawyers and architects may also expect to be called by their professional titles”部分，我们只有另起一个分句才比较符合我们的语言习惯，因此最后采用的是分译法。

例：The project involved the weekly production of about 50 million screw-worms at a specially constructed“fly factory”,the use of 20 light airplanes to fly arranged flight patterns,five to six hours daily,each plane carrying a thousand paper cartons,each carton containing 200 to 400 irradiated flies.

译文：这项计划包括每周在专门建造的“蝇厂”生产大约五千万只螺旋锥蝇，用20架轻型飞机按照预定的航线每天飞行五至六个小时，每架飞机运载纸盒1 000个，每个纸盒装有经过辐射处理的螺旋锥蝇200—400只。

说明：注意这个长句的理解与翻译，首先分层理解，然后再用分译法翻译。本句的“involved”后面跟两个平行的宾语：“the weekly production of...”，和“the use of...”。“each plane carrying a thousand paper cartons”，和“each carton containing 200 to 400 irradiated flies”是两个独立主格结构作状语。这两个结构可以译成两个分句。

4）综合法

上述三种不同的翻译方法在翻译过程中并非截然分开。单纯的使用一种译法不能译出地道的汉语。这时就要对全句进行仔细分析、推敲，或按时间先后，或按逻辑顺序，有顺有逆地进行综合处理。恰当选用几种翻译方法对全句进行综台处理。

例：Since the company wouldn’t desire applicants who do not have a good profile,it is important that an application form sent to a prospective employer should request clear information about such things as the applicant’s age,qualifications and work experiences as well as references from other individuals who know the applicant well.

译文：由于公司不会录用简历欠佳的申请者，因此有希望的应聘者应尽可能地向雇主提供包括诸如年龄、资历、工作经验等信息在内的申请表，从该表中潜在的雇主可以向了解应聘者情况的有关人士征求意见，这一点是很重要的。

说明：“it is important”是主句，其中“it”是形式主语；“that an application form should request clear information”是真正的主语从句。“Since the company wouldn’t desire applicants who do not have a good profile”是原因状语从句，其中“who do not have a good profile”是定语从句，修饰其前的名词“applicants”。“sent to a prospective employer”是过去分词短语作定语，修饰其前的名词“an application form”。“about such things as the applicant’s age,qualifications and work experiences as well as references from other individuals who know the applicant well”是介词短语作定语修饰其前的名词“clear information”，其中“who know the applicant well”是定语从句修饰其前的名词“other individuals”。此句结构复杂，宜采用综合法来译。

例：The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people,for many of our white brothers as evidenced by their presence here today have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.

译文：席卷黑人社会的这种奇异的反抗情绪决不能让我们不信任所有的白人。因为白人兄弟亲临现场就证明了许多白人兄弟已经认识到他们的命运与我们的命运是息息相关的，他们的自由与我们的自由也是息息相关的。

说明：这个长句由“for”连接的两个分句组成。前一个分句带有一个由“which”引导的定语从句，后一个分句由一个主句，两个宾语从句和一个由“as”开头的插入成分组成。这个插入成分按照汉语的表达习惯，放到句子的最后去翻译比较合适。全句有两层意思：1）不能让我们不信任所有的白人；2）因为许多白人兄弟已经认识到他们的命运与我们的命运是紧密相连的，他们的自由与我们的自由也是紧密相连的。原文各句的逻辑关系和表达顺序与汉语大致一致，但以“as”开头的短语是插入成分，和汉语表达习惯不同，所以翻译时要顺中有逆，综合处理。
