英语的句式多样化(sentence variety)既表现了该语言的变化美,也起到了言简意赅的作用。因此,英语学习者不妨在自己的行文中也尝试一下。要写出句式多样化的句子,需从以下两个方面着手:

一、了解几种常用的句子开头方式

1.如果作为修饰语部分的从句是“主语+动词(通常是以be为主的连系动词)+补语”结构,而补语又是形容词时,可将该句中的主语和动词全部省略,这样就出现了以形容词开头的句子。例如:

(1) Sick or well,he is always hopeful.

(2) Fragrant and beautiful,carnations(康乃馨) have become symbolic of mother's love and also Mother's Day.

在第(1)句中,形容词sick or well前的Whether he is被省略了;在第(2)句中,形容词fragrant and beautiful前的Because Carnations are同样被省略了。

2.当要表达“准备”、“打算”、“将要”、“计划”或“想要”做某事时,可直接用动词不定式开头。例如:

(1) To coexist peacefully with others,we need to learn tolerance.

(2) To get the full value of joy,you must have someone to divide it with.

以上两句话的开头分别省略了“If we want”和“If you want”。

3.用过去分词开头。这样用时需注意: a)过去分词的动作通常与主句中谓语动词的动作同时发生,b)通常带有被动的意义。例如:

(1) Shocked by the scene,she runs out of the restaurant in tears.

(2) Surrounded on all sides by water,Manhattan is a busy seaport.

4.用现在分词开头。这样用时需注意: a)现在分词的动作通常与主句中谓语动词的动作同时发生,b)通常带有主动的意义。例如:

(1) Tryingm y best to lose weight,I eat only green salads for lunch every day.

(2) Containing an abundance in protein and low fat,seafood is good for people's health.

5.如果从句中谓语动词的动作发生在主句中谓语动词的动作之前,可以用Having+ done的结构开头。例如:

(1) Having studied all day for exam s,Ron is ready for a break.

(2) Having always been an A student in history,Maria was shocked to find a C on her test paper.

6.借助连接词,改变句子的开头方式。

如果两个动作完全同时发生,有主动的意思,可选择用When+ doing或While+ doing结构开头。例如:

(1) When comparing the body language of North and South Amer I cans,we find more differences than similarities.

(2) While watching the foot ball match,the spectators cheered for their favorite team.

如果两个动作完全同时发生,有被动的意思,可选择用When+ done或While+ done结构开头。例如:

(3) When compared with the size of the whole earth,the biggest ocean does not seem big at all.

(4) While covered with snow during the winter months,Neva do Mountain generally requires little or no specialized equipment or expertise to climb during the summer months.

7.用副词开头。例如:

(1) Slowly,Jennifer realized that her computer was infected.

(2) Quickly yet cautiously,the store detective moved in on the suspected shoplifter.
