唐杨贵妃墓是唐玄宗的贵妃杨玉环的墓葬，坐落在兴平市西北12千米处的马嵬坡。现为省级重点文物保护单位。

杨玉环出生于弘农华阴，后迁蒲州永乐县（今山西芮城），小字玉环，晓音律，善歌舞，有倾国之貌。原为玄宗十八子寿王瑁之妃。唐玄宗见杨玉环不但美丽，而且通晓音律，能歌善舞，便授意杨玉环自请出家做道士，住在太真宫，号杨太真。玄宗不久将她召回，宠爱无比，册封为贵妃，礼遇与皇后无异。

由于唐玄宗过分沉溺于杨贵妃的美色，任用其兄杨国忠为宰相，因而朝政日废，使安禄山割据势力得以迅速壮大，终于爆发了历史上有名的“安史之乱”。

公元755年，节度使安禄山造反，迅速攻破东都洛阳，向长安逼近。唐玄宗带领一班朝臣仓皇出逃，西行至马嵬坡，随行将士杀死杨国忠，又逼唐玄宗赐死杨贵妃。玄宗无奈，只得忍痛割爱，命人将杨贵妃勒死，杨贵妃当年才38岁。

杨贵妃墓占地约0.16英亩，高3米左右，封土四周砌以青砖。关中地区帝王将相、皇亲国戚陵墓数百座，为什么惟独杨贵妃墓砌砖呢？据传，女人用杨贵妃墓上的土搽脸，不但可以除去脸上的黑斑，而且会使皮肤变得细腻白嫩，因此贵妃墓上的土被称为“贵妃粉”，远近的女人竞相来此取土搽脸，连外地游人也要带上一包墓土回去。这样墓堆越来越小，守墓人不断给墓添土，然而不久还是被取光了。为了保护坟墓，后来只好用青砖把它包起来，这样人们就无法再从墓上取土了。公元757年，官军收复长安，李隆基自成都回来，曾密令迁葬杨贵妃。所以，此墓是原来的墓，还是迁葬后的新墓，或者只是杨贵妃的衣冠冢，都无法查证。

Located at Maweipo，some 12 kilometers to the northwest of Xingping City，the tomb is the burial place for Yang Yuhuan，an imperial consort of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty.It is now one of the most important cultural relics under the protection of the Shaanxi Province.

Yang Yuhuan was born in Huayin，Hongnong County.She later moved to live in Yongle County（nowadays Ruicheng County，Shanxi Province）. She was styled as Yuhuan，a national beauty and versed in music and dance and was a concubine of Prince Shou，the eighteenth son of Emperor Xuanzong.The emperor found that Yang Yuhuan was not only a beautiful girl，but also a wonderful singer and dancer，so he incited her to leave home to become a Taoist nun.She lived in Taizhen Temple and adopted the Taoist name Yang Taizhen.Emperor Xuanzong loved her so much that he soon made her his favorite lady，and treated her like an empress.

It was because Emperor Xuanzong doted too much upon the imperial consort Yang and appointed Yang's brother as the prime minister that he neglec ted the administration of state affairs.This gave separatist forces a chance to grow very quickly，thereby causing the noto－rious“Rebellion of An Lush an and Shi Siming”in Chinese history.

In 755 AD，a military officer，An Lushan started a rebellion.After a short time，the eastern capital Luoyang was taken over，and Chang'an，was in great danger.Emperor Xuanzong took his courtiers and fled west in a great hurry.When they reached Maweipo，the ge－nerals and soldiers that had fought all the way with him killed Yang Guozhong，the prime minister.Then they forced the emperor to order Lady Yang to commit suicide. Helpless and desperate，he had to part reluctantly with his favorite lady.Finally，she was hanged at his order.She was only 38 years old.

Her tomb occupies an area of 0.16 acre.It is three meters high and is covered with bricks.In central Shaanxi，there are hundreds of tombs that belong to emperors，generals，chancellors，royal family members and their relatives.Why is the Lady Yang's Tomb alone covered with bricks？It is said that the women at that time used the earth from her tomb to make up their faces.In doing so，their fa cial blemishes were removed，and their skin became delicate and smooth.Therefore，the earth of her tomb was called Lady Yang's Powder.So women living far and near came in large numbers to try the magic earth on their faces with the intention of be coming beautiful.Even tourists from other places would take some home when they visited the tomb. Gradually，the size of her tomb decreased.Though the caretaker never stopped adding new earth to the tomb，it was also gone before long.Later，bricks were used to cover the whole tomb so that its earth could not be taken away.The armed forces of the Tang Go－vernment took over Chang'an in 757 AD. After he came back from Chengdu，Li Longji secret ly gave orders that the Lady Yang's Tomb be moved. Is the present tomb the original one or was it reloca ted or is it the tomb which only contains the personal effects of Lady Yang？It has never been determined.

Trying to clear security at Kimpo International Airport in Seoul，South Korea，I kept setting off the metal detector.Even after I emptied my pockets，the alarm still buzzed. Finally，I remembered that my shoes had metal shanks.I pointed to my shoes，and the agent asked me to take them off.I did so，and I walked successfully through the metal detector.
